Hippocrates said: “All disease begins in the gut.” 2,500 years later we’re just beginning to understand how right he was. Hypothyroidism is no exception. Poor gut health can suppress thyroid function and trigger Hashimoto’s disease, and low thyroid function can lead to an inflamed and leaky gut.
The idea that all cases of autoimmunity (in particular hypothyroidism) involve some degree of intestinal permeability (or “leaky gut”) has become widely acknowledged by functional medicine practitioners. A leaky gut has gaps in the gut lining that allow irritating molecules and substances to escape from the digestive system, and enter into the bloodstream. This irritation can interrupt the immune system’s ability to regulate itself and put the body into a perpetual “attack mode” that is counterproductive to healing.
Most people with Hashimoto’s do have some degree of intestinal permeability. Even those who have no apparent gastrointestinal symptoms, may still have a leaky gut, and addressing gut function might be the best place to start to bring healing to the body.
If we can reverse leaky gut, we can prevent or reverse autoimmunity altogether.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in my practice, is clients who have tried detox programs on their own, whether they bought them online, or at the local health food store.
Detoxification is a 365 day a year process that your body naturally does. Healthy detoxification is not found in a pill, powder or potion. I urge my clients to never fall victim to those quickie juice detoxes, or liver cleanses that flood our inboxes. These are companies trying to make a quick buck. You can severely harm your body by detoxing the incorrect way.
When working with my clients, once we have established a proper clean eating diet and they are ready for full body detoxification, we begin with the colon and kidneys. This is essential because if you don’t open up the downstream pathways, the toxins have no way of getting out of your body. They just wind up circulating through your bloodstream and re-absorbing into your organs.

The number one question I get from my clients is, "What's your secret for keeping the weight off for 24 years?"
The answer is simple. When I stopped thinking of weight loss as a "diet", and began to focus on getting well and healing the cell, that's when the fat began to melt off.
Whenever I listen to podcasts or hear interviews of individuals who have been able to successfully “keep the weight off “ for years, (which by the way is only of 1% of the entire American population), I hear two main common reasons for their success. The first one is they stopped crash dieting and more importantly they stop thinking of losing weight as “going on a diet. They merely just focused on getting their nutrition and health right.
Let’s say we equated our dieting success/failure rate with life in general. What happens when people are on a calorie restricting or starvation diet? Eventually their willpower fades, and their feeling of deprivation become so strong that they think “FORGET THIS!", they binge on junk food and throw in the towel. They basically give up and quit.
Now let’s say you did that every time you made a mistake in life or every time you “messed up”. Think about all the times you made a mistake. Did you throw in the towel and quit life? NO! Of course not. You accepted that you made a mistake and you moved on. You got right back 'on the horse', that is life.
Same goes for living a healthy lifestyle. You ARE going to mess up. That’s a give-in. We are human, and it’s OK to to mess up. But the the difference between the people who succeed, and the people who fail are the ones who get right back "on the horse". They go back to the healthy foundation they created. They don’t beat themselves up for eating something that they know is toxic to their body or that may be contributing to weight gain. They simply just move on and go back to eating their healthier foods. All of the small steps and progress you make while learning the lifestyle, do not get wiped away when you mess up, just like the mistake you make in life do not define you.
The other commonality I hear often when talking with people who have achieved life-long weight control has to do with mindset shifting. They say “I had to look within. I had to ask myself why do I really want this for me. How is this going to benefit me. How is this going to make me feel good about myself. I really had to find self love and appreciate where my body was, and knowing that where I am now is temporary." When they found self-love and stopped looking for external factors, that’s when the magic happened.
Achieving a healthy relationship with food comes from within. How we view food, and our emotions that revolve around the foods that we put in our body is 90% psychological. Anybody can follow a nutrition plan or a “diet “. It’s when you address your mindset that you achieve far greater success not only in weight loss but overall health.
Nutrition is medicine, plain and simple, even for hormone imbalance. Hormones play a role in most all of our bodies processes and are in control of many functions, including our metabolism. And I’m not only speaking of estrogen and testosterone. We have hundreds of hormones coursing through our bodies, secreted from every gland, from the pituitary gland, to the hypothalamus, thalamus, thyroid, and adrenal glands, all of which are working in concert with one another. When one hormone is out of balance, they can no longer communicate with each other, and this is when symptoms arise.
Stress hormones are a huge factor in this day and age. Cortisol, which is secreted by our adrenal glands is not the only culprit, unbeknownst to many. We also are dealing with adrenaline, norepinephrine and other hormones that set our sympathetic system into 'fight or flight'. When we are constantly under stress, our body thinks it’s in trouble. It instinctively thinks we are running from a tiger like our ancient ancestors. So when we are in constant fight or flight, everything shuts down in our bodies, including our metabolism. It’s a survival technique. Our stress hormones and adrenal glands were put there for a reason. So we can get up and bolt in those times of stress... (when we need to run from the tiger).
Proper nutrition, super foods and certain supplements can help to balance all of these hormones, so you can start feeling better immediately. Everybody’s body is different and each and everyone of us has different hormone imbalances and different metabolic schematics. There’s no 'one size fits all'. When working with clients I sit down with them and conduct a very thorough clinical interview, ascertaining a lot of information and symptoms, allowing me to put together a structured program, customized to them, in order to get them on a fast track for hormone balance.
